Legs Are Not Doors

If there’s one thing that everyone knows about me, it’s that I am in a permanent love affair with Proenza Schouler. One of the things that I admire most about the duo is how they’re constantly evolving. As each season goes on, they release new collections that show no signs of slowing down and evident proof of how they’re continuously pushing themselves outside the box. Finding new ways to use materials, taking classics to the next level, and asking “what if?” then going forward with reckless abandon are only a few ways that Proenza Schouler are making waves in fashion.

For their Spring/Summer 2015 campaign, the designers collaborated with Harley Weir and Jen Brill for a fashion film starring some of their favourite faces. ChloĆ« Sevigny, Liv Tyler, Binx Walton, Fei Fei Sun, and more come together in a monologue that has no discerning meaning yet is a great representation of a woman’s sensuality and sexuality.

What do you think of the film?

#ToastMeetsKaren

With dreams of being a copywriter if the coveted spot of Editor-in-Chief of Flare doesn’t come up, I always try to pay attention to new ad campaigns and figure out why the team chose to market their product the way they did. There have been plenty of campaigns out there that were questionable over the years but the fashion industry has come upon a new way of marketing. First, it was the Mansur Gavriel girls using animals as the stars of their campaign. Next on the docket is #ToastMeetsKaren. If you aren’t familiar with Toast, he’s a King Charles dog that Josh “The Fat Jew” Ostrovsky rescued from a puppy mill. Toast is already famous on Instagram boasting 164 k followers but I promise once you see these pictures, you’ll understand why. He has the sweetest face and you can’t help but “awww” when you see him posing with his tongue out. I have always been an advocate for animal welfare and seeing that Ostrovsky saved Toast from a much worse fate is heart warming.

Karen Walker is the Karen in the #ToastMeetsKaren equation who designs eyewear. She creates incredible collections and after seeing Toast in her new Spring/Summer 2015 collection, I may have to splurge and buy a pair of my own. Not only is this a great move for Walker marketing wise but it’s a way to attract a different audience outside of the fashion crowd because no one can resist looking at a cute dog in sunnies. You can shop the collection here.

Tom Ford S/S 2015 Campaign

These are a few of my favourite things: Tom Ford, Daphne Groeneveld, Carine Roitfeld, and Inez & Vindooh. I suppose all the aforementioned “things” I mentioned are actually people but I was taking a page from Julie Andrews book of listing things that make me happy. Nothing made me happier though than finding out that all the people I listed above came together for Tom Ford’s Spring/Summer 2015 campaign. Starring Daphne Groeneveld and Binx Walton, styled by Carine Roitfeld, and photographed by Inez & Vindooh, the photos speak for themselves. Tom and Carine are two peas in a pod and go years back, they’ve even worked hand in hand with a younger Daphne before. The photography duo of Inez & Vindooh themselves are known for their creative prowess and I admire the couple their ability to put their work first and still lead a happy married life. The campaign oozes sex appeal yet the models still look sophisticated. More than anything, I missed seeing Daphne’s presence in the fashion industry and I hope to see her as the face of more campaigns this season.

Proenza Schouler S/S 2015 Campaign

With the recent outpouring of Spring/Summer 2015 ad campaigns, I had been anxiously awaiting one in particular. We got Joan Didion for CĆ©line, Kim and Kanye for Balmain, and Naomi and Jourdan for Burberry, so what other whimsy and wonder would come next? Cue my favourite design duo, Proenza Schouler. Re-enlisting model Julia Bergshoeff as the face of the campaign and shot by their resident photographer, David Sims, Bergshoeff shines in some of the best looks from the Spring/Summer 2015 collection. Arguably their best work yet (imo), this campaign reflects the growth and development of not only the Proenza Schouler girl but also the duo’s handiwork. Not one’s to shy away from the technical side of fashion, the boys have upped the anti with use of fabrics and tailoring, taking their creations to new heights. This campaign is only a taste of the greatness that lies ahead.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West for Balmain SS’15

When I was first brainstorming what to write for this post, I came up empty. It’s pretty self-explanatory why Olivier Rousteing would cast Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, as they’re friends of his, and have been photographed in his clothing numerous times. Balmain is the perfect brand for the celebrity couple to represent – both the brand and couple encapsulate sexiness and sophistication.

In his words, Olivier saidFor this Menswear campaign, I wanted to capture a moment of love. Kim and Kanye are style icons and friends. Together, they represent love, beauty and diversity – they are a new modernity. This is more than a campaign, it expresses something beyond clothes – it is a celebration of love and friendship. It is a new statement for Balmain.”

High Fashion Halloween

It’s the spookiest time of the year. The days are beginning to get shorter, the leaves are changing colour, and stores are promoting all of their Halloween goodies. I for one, am looking forward to this year’s Halloween. It has always been one of my favourite holidays because it’s an opportunity to dress up, and as anyone in fashion knows, we all love a reason to get dressed up. The past few years I haven’t went all out for Halloween but I blame that on my coming of age. This year, I vow to up the anti in the costume department. With a sea of costumes floating around in stores and online, I decided to do something different. With the Spring/Summer 2015 showings having just ended, a plethora of new collections have been introduced. I made it my mission to hunt down some high fashion looks from the collections that could double as Halloween costumes.

Milan Fashion Week Favourites

When I first started writing about fashion, I would always use the word fascino. An Italian word, it translates to glamour. I used to think that for something to be beautiful; whether it be a person, collection, or photograph it had to be glamorous. In retrospect, I think my younger self knew more about fashion than I would give myself credit for. When you think about Italian fashion power houses, they are defined by glamour. Versace, Giorgio Armani, Emilio Pucci, and Dolce & Gabanna are a few names that make people stop in motion when announced. The culture in Milan is rich, like the fabrics and colours used in their designs; as well as the roots of tradition. Many of the fashion brands whose legacies live on today have been passed down generation to generation, with heirs waiting their turn to light the torch, and continue to give new life to the term fascino.

Here are my favourites from the Spring/Summer ’15 collections shown in Milan:

London Fashion Week Favourites

Hello again! I took a few days hiatus as I have been waking up at 4:30AM for work and at the end of the day, the only thing I want to do is watch movies on Netflix. I know, I know – what a hard life. I really want to become a better and more consistent blogger. That said, London Fashion Week started and went by so quickly it was like the blink of an eye. I always love LFW because it features some of my favourite talents (J.W. Anderson, Tom Ford, Erdem). The shortest week of fashion month, whoever organizes the events managed to jam pack a crazy amount of talent into four days. I will let the images from the collections speak for themselves, but please comment what you liked and disliked from London Fashion Week, below!

New York Fashion Week Favourites (Round 2)

I’m back again, with my second round up of my favourite shows from New York Fashion Week. After a whirl wind start, designers continue to show their very best for the Spring/Summer 2015 collections. I took it as a personal gift from the fashion industry when some of my favourite designers showed on my 20th birthday (The Row, Thom Browne, Rag & Bone) and as motivation to recap the fashion that followed this week. It continuously blows my mind how much hard work and time goes into these collections and the production of the shows themselves. For seven or eight minutes, the world goes away, and these catwalks become home to hungry eyes looking for the next big thing. I’m so thankful that there are thousands of people out there who love fashion as much as I do, and work so hard to put this together every year. That said, here are some of the shows that took my breathe away:
