Creature from the Gucci Lagoon

Since Alessandro Michele’s appointment as the creative director for Gucci, the world has gotten a lot more interesting. For A/W 17 he was influenced by science fiction films from the 50’s and 60’s. Pulling inspiration from classics like The Creature From the Black Lagoon and Forbidden Planet, Alessandro has proven that Gucci will transcend through space and time.

Legs Are Not Doors

If there’s one thing that everyone knows about me, it’s that I am in a permanent love affair with Proenza Schouler. One of the things that I admire most about the duo is how they’re constantly evolving. As each season goes on, they release new collections that show no signs of slowing down and evident proof of how they’re continuously pushing themselves outside the box. Finding new ways to use materials, taking classics to the next level, and asking “what if?” then going forward with reckless abandon are only a few ways that Proenza Schouler are making waves in fashion.

For their Spring/Summer 2015 campaign, the designers collaborated with Harley Weir and Jen Brill for a fashion film starring some of their favourite faces. Chloë Sevigny, Liv Tyler, Binx Walton, Fei Fei Sun, and more come together in a monologue that has no discerning meaning yet is a great representation of a woman’s sensuality and sexuality.

What do you think of the film?

With dreams of being a copywriter if the coveted spot of Editor-in-Chief of Flare doesn’t come up, I always try to pay attention to new ad campaigns and figure out why the team chose to market their product the way they did. There have been plenty of campaigns out there that were questionable over the years but the fashion industry has come upon a new way of marketing. First, it was the Mansur Gavriel girls using animals as the stars of their campaign. Next on the docket is #ToastMeetsKaren. If you aren’t familiar with Toast, he’s a King Charles dog that Josh “The Fat Jew” Ostrovsky rescued from a puppy mill. Toast is already famous on Instagram boasting 164 k followers but I promise once you see these pictures, you’ll understand why. He has the sweetest face and you can’t help but “awww” when you see him posing with his tongue out. I have always been an advocate for animal welfare and seeing that Ostrovsky saved Toast from a much worse fate is heart warming.

Karen Walker is the Karen in the #ToastMeetsKaren equation who designs eyewear. She creates incredible collections and after seeing Toast in her new Spring/Summer 2015 collection, I may have to splurge and buy a pair of my own. Not only is this a great move for Walker marketing wise but it’s a way to attract a different audience outside of the fashion crowd because no one can resist looking at a cute dog in sunnies. You can shop the collection here.

Tom Ford S/S 2015 Campaign

These are a few of my favourite things: Tom Ford, Daphne Groeneveld, Carine Roitfeld, and Inez & Vindooh. I suppose all the aforementioned “things” I mentioned are actually people but I was taking a page from Julie Andrews book of listing things that make me happy. Nothing made me happier though than finding out that all the people I listed above came together for Tom Ford’s Spring/Summer 2015 campaign. Starring Daphne Groeneveld and Binx Walton, styled by Carine Roitfeld, and photographed by Inez & Vindooh, the photos speak for themselves. Tom and Carine are two peas in a pod and go years back, they’ve even worked hand in hand with a younger Daphne before. The photography duo of Inez & Vindooh themselves are known for their creative prowess and I admire the couple their ability to put their work first and still lead a happy married life. The campaign oozes sex appeal yet the models still look sophisticated. More than anything, I missed seeing Daphne’s presence in the fashion industry and I hope to see her as the face of more campaigns this season.

Proenza Schouler S/S 2015 Campaign

With the recent outpouring of Spring/Summer 2015 ad campaigns, I had been anxiously awaiting one in particular. We got Joan Didion for Céline, Kim and Kanye for Balmain, and Naomi and Jourdan for Burberry, so what other whimsy and wonder would come next? Cue my favourite design duo, Proenza Schouler. Re-enlisting model Julia Bergshoeff as the face of the campaign and shot by their resident photographer, David Sims, Bergshoeff shines in some of the best looks from the Spring/Summer 2015 collection. Arguably their best work yet (imo), this campaign reflects the growth and development of not only the Proenza Schouler girl but also the duo’s handiwork. Not one’s to shy away from the technical side of fashion, the boys have upped the anti with use of fabrics and tailoring, taking their creations to new heights. This campaign is only a taste of the greatness that lies ahead.

Joan Didion for Céline

Don’t tell me I was the only one whose heart skipped a beat when the image of Joan Didion donning her signature shades for the Céline Spring/Summer 2015 ad campaign came to light. As a writer, I’ve always admired her literary work, and her ethos of minimalism. I’ll admit: I’m a hoarder. I have a terrible time trying to part with anything I own because I believe everything has its own significant value. One of my resolutions for 2015 is to realize less is more and this campaign is another sign of how living simply is never a bad idea. Phoebe Philo, Creative Director of Céline, drew influence for the Spring/Summer 2015 collection from the 70’s so it’s fitting that she would want to partner with someone like Didion who was a recognizable face in that period, and ever since. When you think of Céline, you picture an effortlessly cool girl. The same goes for Didion. Both the brand and the woman encompass the same value that it’s less about the clothes and more about the life you live in them.

It looks like it’s time for me to empty out my suitcase and start re-thinking my packing process (more on this later)! I doubt I’ll ever be able to travel as light as Didion herself (her famous packing list has been quoted so many times) but this campaign has made me re-evaluate the importance of ease and simplicity in all walks of life, starting with my wardrobe.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West for Balmain SS’15

When I was first brainstorming what to write for this post, I came up empty. It’s pretty self-explanatory why Olivier Rousteing would cast Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, as they’re friends of his, and have been photographed in his clothing numerous times. Balmain is the perfect brand for the celebrity couple to represent – both the brand and couple encapsulate sexiness and sophistication.

In his words, Olivier saidFor this Menswear campaign, I wanted to capture a moment of love. Kim and Kanye are style icons and friends. Together, they represent love, beauty and diversity – they are a new modernity. This is more than a campaign, it expresses something beyond clothes – it is a celebration of love and friendship. It is a new statement for Balmain.”

Naomi Campbell and Jourdan Dunn for Burberry Spring ’15

The one thing I love about this time of year (besides the holidays of course) are the unveiling of Spring 2015 ad campaigns. It may sound silly to some, but for me, it’s a time to indulge in beautiful images of models wearing the pieces we’ll be seeing all over the place next season. Burberry is a brand that always creates widely talked about ads. Last season, they had Kate Moss and Cara Delevingne pose together for the My Burberry campaign, and now they’ve brought together Naomi Campbell and Jourdan Dunn for the first time. All four of the models are high profiles in the industry and hailing from Britain, yet the supers had never starred with the heirs to their thrones. The Spring 2015 campaign is great because they are both models who have more to offer than just their looks, as they’re both huge fixtures in their home country. What better way to celebrate a new season and collection than by bringing two of Britain’s best together? The accompanying video is really cute and worth watching as well.

Mansur Gavriel Cast Animals for Spring ’15 Lookbook

Mansur Gavriel took the fashion world by storm with their bucket bags. With a sleek and chic design, they’re the perfect bag for any occasion. With endorsements from it girls like Eva Chen, Miranda Kerr, and Alessandra Ambrosio, the duo behind Mansur Gavriel are on the right track to becoming a household name. For their Spring 2015 collection, they didn’t want to slow down the momentum of their popularity, and took a different route for their lookbook.

It can be difficult to make a lookbook exciting, as you want the focus to be the collection, but Mansur Gavriel called on some adorable animal friends to show off their latest collection of bags. What better way to entice shoppers than showing them the coveted it bag right now alongside baby kangaroos and sloths? If you are like me and wishing you had your own bucket bag to call your own, fear not, as the brand re-launched their e-commerce section on Tuesday. This is the kind of marketing I can get behind.
