Dark Angel

Alexander McQueen was a visionary unlike any other. Not satisfied with the typical, he always went above and beyond to create clothing that spoke more about the woman than anything else. He may not have been known for sex appeal or making ultra feminine pieces yet it was a fact that when you wore a McQueen piece, you were unstoppable.

I want to empower women. I want people to be afraid of the women I dress.” This quote was voiced by the man himself and in two sentences summed up the world he devised for those who he dressed. He acknowledged the misogyny in the world and gave women armour to take it on. His shows were more than that, they were theatrical presentations meant to make you question everything you believe in. If Lee was here today, I hope he would see the impact he’s left on all of us.

He was the first fashion designer that I ever truly loved and when I heard of his suicide, I was devastated. How heartbreaking it is to lose someone you love so much that you’ve never met or talked to but still has all of your heart. His collections made me think and realize that within his theatrics, he always had the same focus in mind: making women feel powerful. Whether it be having his models dress in elaborate looks that were almost costume like or upping the anti on what society deemed appropriate, McQueen was never going to fit into the mold that society wanted him to. With the date of his passing coming in a few days, and the Savage Beauty exhibit coming to London for the first time ever, Vogue UK decided to honour the man who created a world of whimsy for us all.

The magazine was given special access to McQueen’s archives and picked some of the most famous looks he ever created. Models Aya Jones, Xiao Wen Ju, Harleth Kuusik, Yumi Lambert, and Nastya Sten all look hauntingly beautiful in these images. McQueen created magic, not clothing.

When I first saw the images I can honestly say I was brought to tears. Not only is McQueen one of my heroes, he will forever be my muse, because he was the reason I became so enamoured with this industry in the first place.

#TBT – Una Donna, Due Stili

One thing I love about Tumblr is how it’s an endless stream of inspiration. I’m constantly checking the app on my phone or looking at my dashboard on my laptop because it helps me come up with topics for the blog. When I was on the site earlier I came across a photo of Linda Evangelista in an editorial for Vogue Italia. It was from the October 1993 issue but she looked stunning (as always). I wanted to see the rest of the spread because I thought it may offer some winter style inspiration. Luckily, the fashion fanatics at The Fashion Spot can always be counted on for sharing scans of photoshoots like this one in particular. I found this editorial quickly thanks to user LylaScans, who shared all of the editorials from the October 1993 issue, which was terrific because it’s interesting to see the difference in the style of photography from back then to the present. I hope you all like these images as much as I do and they help you when you’re getting ready to face those brutal temperatures.

Kate Moss for Vogue Italia

Kate Moss is the epitome of cool. Ever since she graced the modeling scene back in the 90’s, she’s never been a poster child for your typical pretty face. Despite a rocky relationship with drugs and alcohol in the past, she’s aged gracefully, and in this editorial for Vogue Italia shot by Peter Lindbergh she looks better than ever. The entire photo shoot is untouched and when you look through the images, you may turn green with envy knowing that Kate is one person who would never need Photoshop.

Showtime

Have you ever wondered about all the work that goes into producing a fashion show? Certainly the models don’t just appear out of thin air in the clothes ready to sashay down the runway. If that was the case, there wouldn’t be nearly as many people working in this industry as there are now. Many folks, myself included, would die for the opportunity to go backstage at a fashion show. I’ve seen footage on reality tv shows like The Rachel Zoe Project and House of DVF but experiencing the entire process would be something different altogether. ELLE UK has given their readers the opportunity to get a better feel of the hectic atmosphere that is backstage before a huge runway show. Partnering with Nicolas Ghesquière, Creative Director of Louis Vuitton, famous photographer Jean-Paul Goude helped recreate the madness that was the Louis Vuitton Spring/Summer 2015 fashion show. Featuring models getting their hair and makeup done, show producers trying to herd models, and Nicolas putting the finishing touches on the looks; it’s an experience in itself to see how many people it takes to come together for a fashion show to go off without a hitch. Who would have guessed that for all the mayhem that goes into a show, after the blink of an eye (or eight minutes to be more precise), it’s onto the next show?

Tilda Swinton: The Surreal World

Tilda Swinton is an ethereal creature. Sometimes I wonder if she’s even human. She possesses the mystery and wonder of an undiscovered entity – we all know she exists, but is she real? The way she transforms herself from character to character and can take on new life with hair and makeup is astonishing. Not only this, there is more to the woman that meets the eye. GQ chose her as their Woman of the Year and after I read the article, my love and respect for her grew. I can only imagine what it would be like to spend time with her… I bet it would be refreshing and enlightening all at once. Just like her latest editorial for W Magazine. Shot by Tim Walker, creator of fairy tales, Tilda visited the legendary Menil Collection. Owned by legendary collectors Dominique and John de Menil, their house is a work of art in itself. Together, Tilda and Tim have created a fantasy that blurs the line between reality and a dream.

Charlie Hunnam for Vogue

Who tuned in for the series finale of Sons of Anarchy on Tuesday? I have yet to watch it so please spare me any spoilers, but I’ve been a diehard fan from the beginning. My ex-boyfriend and I used to marathon the episodes and pull all nighters because we were so entranced by the show. I’m devastated it’s over but I’m glad that it’s by the hand of the creator, Kurt Sutter, rather than the network cancelling it. One of the reasons I loved the show so much was because of the main character, Jax Teller. If you haven’t read my Holiday Gift Guide 2.0, you’ll see I even thought of some Christmas gifts for the President of Sam Cro. Now that the series has come to an end, I’m curious to what the man behind the actor will do next. That man is the beautiful Charlie Hunnam. I say beautiful because it’s the first word that comes to mind when I see pictures of his beautiful blue eyes, chiseled body, and long hair. He has slowly become one of my celebrity crushes but after you see this editorial for American Vogue, I bet you’ll be on Team Charlie as well.

Photographed by Bruce Weber, Charlie poses alongside models Caroline Trentini and Anna Ewers in an array of playful yet romantic shots. I love Bruce’s work because you can tell that his subjects feel comfortable and aren’t holding anything back. If I was a model he would be the number one photographer I’d like to work with. Not to mention, I’ve loved Anna since I first laid eyes on her, earlier last year. I hold Brigitte Bardot in high regard so seeing as Anna could be her daughter, it’s fairly obvious why I’m so fond of her. All in all, I feel like this shoot was made for me. There’s nothing like seeing the amazing results of your favourite people working together to create magic.

Because it’s Wednesday and Daria Werbowy is a Canadian supermodel who I admire not only for her lengthy high-end modeling portfolio, yet her philanthropy, and ability to stay grounded. Shot by Mikael Jansson for the September 2014 issue of Interview Magazine, Daria looks stunning in black and white while standing on the line between playful and rough.
