Growing up, my parents never read me The Little Prince. It wasn’t until I started my first year of university that I bought a copy of the book and understood why everyone loved the story so much. I read it cover to cover in a single sitting, and even two years later, I remember exactly where I was and how it made me feel. A book that is aimed at children that still manages to be full of wisdom and whimsy, Antoine du Saint-Exupéry’s book The Little Prince is one of the best-selling books of all time. According to The Verge, it has sold 140 million copies, putting it between the first Harry Potter book (107 million) and A Tale of Two Cities (200 million). Yet the animated film adaption, slated for release in 2015, gives a whole new meaning to that fantasy world.
The trailer is in French (of course) yet you don’t even need to understand the language to appreciate the beauty that is the trailer. A mixture of papercraft animation (for the prince himself) and Pixar-esque CG for the rest of the film, it captures the story brilliantly, with a new twist on the classic. There’s no talk of when an English speaking trailer will be released but they have signed on an incredible voice cast – James Franco, Rachel McAdams, Jeff Bridges, Marion Cotillard, Ricky Gervais, Benicio del Toro, and others.
Le Petit Prince will debut on October 7, 2015 in France.
