Alexander Wang Dives into Denim

In a few years, Alexander Wang has become a household name. Everything the designer does blows up in the media and for good reason – he has the talent to back it up. Starting off in fashion known for his sporty clothing, he has slowly built an empire for himself, resulting in a smaller, more affordable brand (T by Alexander Wang) and the appointment as Creative Director of Balenciaga. At the age of 30, he already has a lifetime of achievements under his belt. His eponymous brand’s transition into denim is one that we all should have been expecting and I will admit, I’m eager to get my hands on a pair (or two, or three) of his new denim collection.

The women’s denim line consists of three different cuts in three different washes: the Wang 001, Wang 002, and Wang 003. In an interview with Women’s Wear Daily, Wang admits he is a bit particular about the terminology used when referring to the collection. The Wang 001 is not a skinny jean but a slim fit with a high rise to sit at the waist and a 1% stretch for the two indigo washes with 2% for the black wash. The Wang 002, also known as the relaxed fit, has zero stretch and is his own take on a men’s fit made for a women’s body. The Wang 003 is a boy cut with a low-cut waist and wide, yet tapered leg. “We’re not calling them boyfriend jeans. I hate it when you roll them and your ankle is swimming, so I cut it so you roll it twice and it stays pegged,” he tells WWD’s Jessica Iredale.

This isn’t Wang’s first foray into denim, as he had shown distressed jeans on the runway for T by Alexander Wang, yet he was hesitant about an actual launch. “At the end of the day, you can’t really be revolutionary with denim. But you can go in and tweak and really find the nuances and the way to put it together,” he told WWD. He spent two years researching and perfecting the fit and fabrication of the line.

Not one to go the traditional route with advertising, his campaign for the line is provocative. Starring his muse Anna Ewers, the two shots evoke a sense of eroticism that is reminiscent of the 90’s Calvin Klein advertisements. Although Wang’s goal was to get a reaction, he tells Iredale, “It’s not just provocative in terms of sexy, but provocative to invoke conversation. I’m not dictating what that message is exactly. The interesting part is to see how people interpret it, and what they have to say about it. Of course, there are going to be people who disagree with it.

With a portfolio that proves his work is magnificent, I stand behind the launch of the collection and look forward to purchasing my first pair of Wang 001’s. The collection launched on Wednesday and will launch in his New York stores and on his US website on December 8th.
